You are at the website of the No Night Flights Group. We are a group of concerned residents who have been campaigning to protect Thanet and East Kent from all night flights (other than humanitarian, mercy or emergency) since 2009.
Our latest campaign is against the proposals of a newly formed company, RiverOak Strategic Partners (RSP), to take the land from its owners through a Development Consent Order (DCO). To do so, they have to prove that Manston could be of national significance, that it would be in the public interest to develop it as a huge cargo hub airport and that it would handle 12,000 flights a year. Their plan is actually to have 17,000 cargo flights a year.
This would inevitably mean night flights which is why we continue to campaign against an airport that doesn’t even exist any more.
Do we think that the DCO is likely to succeed? No. Manston has been investigated time and again by government commissions and by independent aviation experts and has been found wanting. It is agreed, through these reports and an examination of its history, that it is in the wrong location and that it will never be a successful cargo or passenger airport.
However, we are not prepared to take any chances. With even the slimmest chances of success, our fate could be sealed with no chance to reverse it.
RSP DO NOT WANT TO BRING BACK THE SMALL, LOCAL AIRPORT THAT PEOPLE REMEMBER FONDLY – THEY WANT A MASSIVE CARGO HUB THAT IS EQUAL TO OPERATIONS AT EAST MIDLANDS AIRPORT.
